How to get rid of that Servo Tracking errors !!!
I received a message from Carsten Berndt who found an solution for those damn Servo Tracking Errors:
I´ve got the problem with the "Servo Tracking Error" too. After lots of tries, I dismounted the hole chassis of the JVC.I was a little shocked as I´ve seen the simple mechanic. Ok, I´ve cleaned the damned thing, but mainly, I´ve put a little bit of machine-oil on the little guiding-pole, it is at one side under thelaser-head. Another drip of oil on all the moving parts is also nessecary. So, after all, the JVC works really fine.Greetings from Carsten
Well, after reading this, I also decided to open up my writer, and to oil ( I used some greace) the moving parts. After I oiled the parts and cleaned the lens, my writer works fine again, and I haven't had a single servo error yet. So hopefully is this the solution, but time will tell. I will also have to thank Carsten Berndt, coz he was kind enough to digitize the images of the whole cleaning process. Here are the pictures and descriptions for the JVC writer :
picture 1: there are 4 screws to be removed
Picture 2: Also remove this screw at the below site
picture 3: These screws are difficult to reach, please be carefully!
picture 4: I took the the case in my hand, and with my other hand I pulled the device backwards, it's not very easy, but as Carsten said : ' Be a little voilent like me' ,but not too much ofcoz!
picture 5: remove also these screws.......
picture 6: Here's a picture of the inner side of our beloved :-) writer. above you can see the guiding pole, where the head moves along. You will have to oil this part, use some machine-oil, but not too much ofcoz. You can also use some greace (is that the right word for it ?...) And below is also a part that needs some oil or greace. As you can see, it's a very simple mechanism that moves at the metal. Don't forget to oil the whole part, coz servo tracking errors mostly appear at the out-side of a cd, and the writer writes from the inside to the outside, so in this picture the outside is at the left side!
picture 7: another view of the part that needs to be oiled. I noticed that there was a sticker at the writing device that said PHILIPS part..... that means the writing mechanism is made by philips, and the rest (electronics) by JVC, strange coz Philips happens to make one of the best CD-Writers, but why is the JVC so buggy ?????????? You tell me.....
picture 8: Don't remove the spring! I did, and it took me very long time to get the spring back at the place where it belonged, but when you remove it, you have a much better look at the device. By the way: When your writer is still open, its also usefull to clean the lens. I did it with some cleaning alcohol, but there are also some special cleaning liquids for cleaning laser-lenses .You can also use some After-shave with a high alcohol percentage.
That wasn't too hard , was it? After doing this myself, I never burnt so much CD's withouth a problem. I also received another message from Carsten :
All I can say is, that the Servo Tracking Errors occured almost every tries before I´ve oiled the movable parts. I usually work with ECBACKUP, a very nice backup tool, which can further use a CD with errors after a faulty writing process. In fact, the software only writes tracks, an after an unsuccesful process, it can write other tracks on the same CD. Before I´ve oiled the writer, it was only possible to write tracks about 30-40 MBytes. Longer tracks were unsuccessful. Now, I never see the error message again, just Buffer Underflows, but this is quite normal, if you backup thouthends of little images e.g. in the netscape´s cache.Especially the problem AFTER a writing process, the Update of the PDA does´nt occur anymore. I will have an eye on it and inform you! Bye Carsten
Oke, please let me know if it works also for your writer, that's the only way to be sure if this is the solution for those stupid servo-tracking errors, so people : MAIL ME !!!!! januzz@noord.bart.nl
